CAUTION FOR PEOPLE SELLING HORSES:
(or any other item on the internet)
HORSE SCAM ALERT
updated 4/11/08
*NOTE: WHINNY receives several e-mails and
phone calls a day from
people who have posted horses, trailers, etc
saying that they have received multiple
"Offers" from these scam artists.
Please send each e-mail in a complaint to
the authorities listed below. It is the only
way to attempt to stop
this problem. Also, they seem to target items
or horse ads under $3,000 and over $1,000. If your horse, trailer,
saddle, etc, falls in that range, you may wish to leave the price off
the ad. You may also wish to leave your e-mail address off your ad.
*Tips
1. If someone wishes to purchase your item with a cashiers check or money order without first seeing your item...it's a fraud.
2. If a "buyer" has an "agent" in the US willing to make the purchase for them....it's a fraud.
3. Have a seperate e-mail address that is used solely for selling items on the internet.
4. These scams do not contain executable code, attachements or other means of sending viruses. They are only nuisances unless you decide to answer one of these scams.
5. If someone is offering to buy your "Item" and does not request to see the item...it's a good chance it's a fraud. Who would buy a horse without at least seeing a video?
6. Currently, scammers are saying that they are from American addresses. It is usually very easy to tell scammers by their very poor command of the English language.
Seller's Beware - Important notice to people who sell our equine friends
People selling horses are receiving buyer inquiries from a third party regarding the purchase of a horse from a potential buyer in Nigeria or Africa and other countries. This inquiry commonly attempts to arrange the purchase of the horse(trailer, truck or any other article posted on the internet for sale) with a cashiers or certified check covering the price of the horse and shipping. After the horse has been shipped, they commonly ask you to refund the shipping charges as part of a "finders' fee" arrangement.
Unfortunately, the cashier's check that is sent is counterfeit. This fact is not uncovered until the horse and the finder's fee have been forwarded to the scam artists.
To protect yourselves and others against this type of activity, it is important to try and obtain as much information about the buyer as possible. If you suspect the buyer may be involved in this or similar scams, please forward any information you can obtain to the following organizations:
For U.S. complaints use the Federal Trade Commission Consumer Complaint Form:website or website

For Canadian Complaints contact the Royal Canadian Mounted Police:website NEW LINK

To help you in recognizing these types of scams, we have provided below a list of indicators. They are only guidelines, and as always, should be tempered with common sense.

One of the newest SCAMS is happening to the BUYER of a used horse trailer, purebred puppy, horse, saddle, etc. Buyers answer an e-bay or any other recognized auction site ad and are requested to send partial or full payment for an item. The item doesn't exist! Here is a letter sent from a NY resident in late March 2007:
Subject: learn from my mistakes
I sold my gooseneck trailer and was in the process of purchasing a trailer on www.dreamhorse.com
i had contacted a few trailers and when this guy emailed back, said he had been out of town, and was i still interested? i said yes i was, it was 6K Sundowner and aluminum never had a horse in it. 2006 perfect condition. Well then he told me that he had first advertised it on ebay, and that he was still binded through Ebay and we needed to go through this motors buyer protection thing where you put 40% down, (wire money)=NEVER WIRE MONEY) . Of course i received what looked like EBAY confirmation with a fake number on it.
Wed i wired out 2400 (130 to wire it) out to some guy in FL who was suppose to hold it until i got the trailer to VT checked it out and it was exactly what it was said to be.. So i thought it was safe, what could i loose right? If the trailer was misrepresented i just send it back, they pay shipping and i get my money back(2500 bucks)
Well yesterday i got no emails from these two individuals, and i emailed them both and asked what was the next step, should i have the trucker pick up the trailer, etc.. of course no emails from them. So i couldn't sleep last nite and i got up and started researching this on the Internet. After reading that EBAY no longer carries that program and then reading more on ebay about NEVER EVER NEVER wire money it became apparent to me that i had been scammed. I contacted Ebay, I contacted the Attorney General's office and filed a complaint, i contacted my bank which told me i was SOL. And then i told my husband, anyways, he took all my paperwork to work this morning (as i always make copies of everything) and gave it to one of the guys that has training in this Internet fraud), and basically Steve told me that this goes on all the time, usually tracks down to Africa or somewhere foreign when he calls these phone numbers back, they spoof the ebay page and make it look real, and bottom line he's checked the addresses and names and they are all madeup. i'm out the money and the trailer, if there ever was a trailer.
yah, i screwed up badly....
oh well this will not go without some repercussion, as now i will make my life out to get these assholes out off the internet. It's going to be my game next.. Steve is following up on this and will be subpeona some records and people to see what he can on his end, but it's pretty much a lost cause.
Big Promises
Claims such as offering more money than the asking price without an initial conversation regarding the horse are almost always a sure sign of a scam. Be careful of any individual who wants to send you more money than you are asking for.
High Pressure Tactics
Be wary of individuals asking you to speed up the transaction beyond your comfort range. Again, a legitimate deal probably isn't going to move as fast as your money. Don't let yourself be pressured -- think things through.
Requests for financial information.
Don't give out any bank information without establishing a comfort level with the buyer or seller.
Always get something in writing.
You should never complete a transaction without first writing down the terms of the deal and have each party sign it. If you can't afford a lawyer to draft up a contract, you still should write down the terms of the deal in plain English and get it signed. Any buyer or seller that is hesitant or resists is usually a sure sign of a potential problem.
Remember the old saying, "If it sounds to good to be true, it probably is."
I received this important message in an e-mail from Aaron T. Bromagem, President of Equine.com. Visit their website at http//www.equine.com. This is the real deal, I have been contacted several times from these so called over seas traders. They offer great deals but as soon as you start asking them too many questions, they disappear.
Below I have listed two "Over Sea's Traders" and my e-mail conversations with them to help you protect yourself.
****Here are some of the latest SCAMS being sent as advertising. Would anyone really borrow money from someone whose grammar and spelling are this poor??

Hello Yomi,
I'm just curious isn't it costly and risky trying to ship horses unseen over seas? Can you tell me more about your operation and the types of horses you look for? Sorry for asking questions but it seems a little far fetched to me. I have heard of people going overseas for exceptional bloodlines and performance, but for a family horse, I'm sorry but I don't see the economics in that. I wouldn't mind doing business with you but I just want to make sure this is not a joke of any sort.

Hi Melissa, I have been doing business in Africa for over a decade now. Getting products down to my base in this part of the world is really not a problem, as I have long-standing agents that take care of that. However, I know talking about a horse is quite a different thing. I'm making a special arrangement to get the horse down here, through a special agent. I also have an alternative in an uncle that is moving back to Africa from the States. He is not only a keeper of pets but a wonderful and sensitive person. I believe he will be of great assistance as he is bringing his lovely dog down to Africa also. So, what do you think ? Let me know ASAP. Regards, Yom

Yomi,
Hello, sorry it took me awhile to get back to you. I would accept $2200 US dollars for the appaloosa mare. You would assume all sipping and vaccination requirements for overseas handling, which I am sure you are use to handling. Total payment would be due upon pick up at my stable in the form of Bank Check/ Money Order or Cash. If you wish for me to hold the horse and not entertain any more offers I would need a non refundable holding fee of 10% that would be put towards the horse if you chose to purchase her. Again I am sorry I didn't get back to you sooner this week has just ran away with me! If you need any more information or photos of her please visit my website http://www.horsingaround4h.com/4sale.html Her name is Tasha, or just ask. Again I am sorry it took me awhile to get back to you sooner.

Thanks for the mail,i am o.k with your price.Inrespect of payment i have a client in the US who is owing me $8,730.All i need to do to make payment easier and faster is to instruct him to procure a cashiers check and mail it to you on the name, address and telephone number you want on the check and you know it takes 24hrs for a cashiers check to clear in the U.S.But i would want to know if i can trust you to send my balance to me via western union money transfer after the money must have cleared in your bank to enable me prepay the Frieght/shipping company here so that they can instruct their office in the US to come and pick the Horse from your location.pls mail me asap to enable me arrange payment .
Thanks,Damilola.

Damilola, I would prefer if at all possible that your client just send us a Money Order/bank check for the $2000 and then he can western Union the balance to you. I don't think I want to get involved in the payments of other clients, I'm sorry. If this is at all feasible then lets go with it....I never herd back from her.
Here is another series of e-mails sent to WHINNY recently. This case was also reported to the FTC.
Goodday,
Compliments of the season,im a Vet Doctor and an Agent in west Africa . Im interested in your HORSE,I would like to know the present condition and if it is ready to be purchased to me. If interested in doing buisness with me mail me back and let me get in touch with you in full details.
Thanks.
Mr.james.
James,
I currently have two horses for sale (Mother and colt) A 3yr. old Paint/Morgan gelding $1500 and a 7 yr old Paint/Morgan/Draft mare $1200. Although, they are a little dirty and shagy because of the season, they are ready to go.
If you have any other questions, please let me know. Also, let me know which one you are interested in and I can give you more details.
Thanks.
Gooddya
The price $1200 for the mare is okay by me i have contacted my client about it and he says it is okay for that price, like i said earlier he would make out a check with your information. But before i continue there is something i would like you to know first ,my client in the US is oweing $5000 and i have told him about the horse and he said he would make neccesary arrangement and write you a check of $5000 which he owes me then you take out your $1200 and send the balance to my shipper who would be coming to pick up the horse throught western union. After the payment clears my client would be coming to pickup the horse. If these arrangement is okay by you ,mail me back with your full address information(name, phone#,address)which the check would be made to you.
Awaiting on your response. Regards.
James.
Hey James,
Everything sounds ok, I need to talk it over with my husband first, but I don't see any problems with it. I am a little curious, is the mare going to go to Africa, or stay in the states? Also, what are you going to be using the mare for? I'm not trying to be snoopy, and there are no problems, just wondering. Also, I think it would be better if we did things in one of two ways. #1- The money be sent to us, however a check for $1200 be made out to me, and the remainder be made out to the person who will be comming to get the horse and I can mail it to them. or #2- All the money be sent to the shipper, and when they arrive to get the horse, they can give me the money for her at that time (cash or certified funds).
Thanks
Hello
Thank you for the mail im very very interested in buying it form you. I would be going by your rule #1. I think it is okay by me ,i have contacted my client about the whole arrangemnets and he said you should forward your full name, address and phone # in which the check would be made out to. I would be wainting on your mail.
Thanks James
There were some other misc. emails back and forth, then we didn't hear anything for a few days. We gave him and address (not our home address) to send the funds. We also gave him a phone number to contact us. He emailed us and let us know that the funds had been sent and that we would receive them within a few days. Then, he called us using the RELAY service on the phone (mostly used by individuals who can not hear). We asked him the shippers information, and he gave us a name and an address.
Hello ,My client told me you should have recieved the cheque by now,
However... this is my shippers information which you need for the balance to be sent via western union transfer . Nwachukwu jeremiah
Passport Number:A1611423 , 21 Adeyemo Alakija Street, koyi Lagos Nigeria 23401. ,once the cheque is cashed in your Bank today,i want you to wire the difference through Western union money transfer to my shipper who is currently about to book a flight to the US,The transfer should be made with his name and passport number so he would receieve the payments at the airport on his way ,you can deduct the western union charges from my balance.......
I would prefer the transfer made in a western union outlet and not at the bank because of the rates. ,once the transfer as been made i will need details like the MTCN,test question and anwser with the sender's information so the funds can be picked up,my shipper will come and pick it up once the transfer as been made.
Looking forward to hear from you. My regards to your family
JAMES
After receiving this email, I was very concerned. Fist of all, I requested two seperate checks (he sent it all in one) Then, he made it clear to cash it at "my bank" And last, the shipper name he gave us was different then the name and address he gave us before. Anyway, I emailed him back and told him I was not going to go through with the sale. I had waited to long, and had allready turned down another offer. I told him when i received the check I would return it right away. Well, we did receive the cashier check sent by Fed Ex. I opened it, and boy did it look real. I called the bank that was on the cashiers check just to see if I had lost money, or if I was smart by backing out. Well, the bank informed me that it was no good and to please fax them a copy and to contact my local Police Dept. I called the local Police Dept. and they are now handling it. I never heard back from James after I let him know I would send the check back.
I would like to say, that i may have went through with this. When you get a Certified Cashiers Check, you expect it to be good. The thing that made me look a little closer is a friend called and told me to check out this web sight and read about what is going on. Boy am I glad I checked it out. Thanks, and good luck.
Here is another recently sent e-mail:

same con artists were e-mailing me about my gelding I have for sale. Will
you please ad this to the same scammer's "alias" list? I am SURE it's the

Good morning-I thought I would send this to you. You might want to warn people who are placing ads to sell their horses. This guy contacted me about [horse] (the guy is from Canada) and was going to send me $3000 sight unseen for him. Obviously, I was a bit skeptical, and since responding back to him (see below), I have not heard back from him. This is very disconcerting, because some people need the money and might sell their horse thinking he is going to a good home.

Mark-I am sorry but I am not willing to send my horse off without having a better understanding of exactly where he is going, what he is doing, and what sort of home he will have. This is not about the money for me, it is about making sure my horse would have a good home, how he would be cared for, and what you would do with him if he could not be ridden any more. I am certainly not trying to be difficult, but there are too many people out there who will take an older horse and sell him for the horse meat. I am not willing to take that chance.
Feel free to call me, otherwise, without having a good understanding, I will not sell [horse] to you.
Sincerely,
Deb

Mark-
[Horse}is 19 years old. We are currently treating an absess on his left front leg that is almost healed, but a portion of his hoof blew out when the absess popped. He has a special shoe on that foot. We are weaning him off of shoes on his back legs. My price for [Horsey] is $3000 but I would have to approve the home that he would go to.
What would your plans be for Willy? Where are you located? Did you see my ad on whinny.org?
If you are still interested, please call my cell phone at 555-555-5555 I am leaving for a horse show this morning and will not be back until Sunday night. I will not be checking email until sometime on Monday.

NJ My lovely pony horse Tracy is currently 11hh tall and weigh 350 lbs . She is a 6 yo Welsh pony who can be used as a schooling, show pony, and to ride . She has had recent vet checks , Coggins tests and flexion tests and is healthy, sound and jumping 2'6''on average but can reach a maximum of 3'5 now . Tracy is an easy keeper. She has a typical sassy pony attitude, but is generally sweet ,safe and an all rounder. She needs a home where she will be loved and used. |
